Arowanas are freshwater bony fish also known as Dragon FIsh. The silver variant of the arowana is natively from South America and is considered a solitary fish, accepting company only when it’s young. They are carnivorous and tend to spend most of their life near the surface of the water, where they hunt. Due to the fact that arowanas are surface feeders, they developed a hunting technique by jumping up to 2m from the water surface, getting them the name ‘’water monkeys’’.
They can grow up to 1 m in length and as adults they show dominance and aggression in the tank. Due to their size and behavior, it is recommended to keep them in large tanks and alongside compatible species like Knifefish, Pacu, Oscars, Jaguar cichlids, Green terrors or any other fish that would not fit into the arowana’s mouth.
Recommended tank parameters:
- Minimum tank size of 500 liters
- Water temperature: 24 to 29 degrees Celsius
- PH: 5 to 7.5
- Water Hardness: 1 to 8 dGH
